A super easy Valentine String Ornament tutorial for the kids to enjoy! This is my favourite Valentine String Craft for all ages.
- String, cut into 6 to 12 inch pieces (no need to measure exactly) Cotton or acrylic yarn works best
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup water
- Heart Shaped Cookie Cutters in various sizes
- Sheet Pan
- Parchment Paper
MAKE CORN STARCH GLUE
Combine cornstarch and water in small saucepan. Stir until smooth. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and smooth. Remove immediately from heat. Stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of glitter. Allow it to cool to touch (just a few minutes).
PREPARE SHEET PANS
While glue is cooling, lay out cookie cutters on a sheet pan covered with parchment paper.
MAKE YARN ORNAMENTS
When glue is cool, completely coat a piece of yarn with glue. The glue is very thick, just press the yarn right into it and smoosh it all around. Pull yarn between two fingers to remove large clumps of glue, then place yarn in cookie cutter on parchment paper.
Repeat until the yarn pieces fill the cookie cutter and resemble its heart shape. Then, remove cookie cutter carefully from yarn. If needed, use a pencil and press down the top of the heart to emphasise its heart shape.
If desired, sprinkle with a bit more glitter (my daughter says you can’t ever have too much glitter!). Repeat until you have as many yarn hearts as desired.
“COOK” THE ORNAMENTS
Place parchment paper with hearts carefully on large cookie sheet. Place in oven on Warm, or 150 degrees Fahrenheit, for 2 to 3 hours, or until hearts are hard. Remove from cookie sheet and cool.
Attach a ribbon and display your sparkly handiwork!
